Chapter 39

On closer inspection it is clear the baby isn’t human, at least not completely.
“You can’t do that. Give me it back!” She reaches out to grab him and when I say grab I mean it. Not cradle or hold it to her chest as I am now, but pull him by his arm.
“Touch him and it will be the last thing you ever do,” The voice that comes out my mouth is a low, threatening one I have never heard before. If I wasn’t so mad, it might have scared myself too.
“B…But…” She stutters, the fear clear in her eyes and voice.
“It’s a bastard. It’s a half-breed,” She confirms my suspicions but spoke as though it makes a difference.
“I don’t care if ‘he’ is the son of a murder, ‘he’ is still a baby!” I growl again. “Now, if you know what’s good for you-you will let me leave and not stop me.”
She hesitates but does as I told.
I don’t know what I was expecting in the future, but not this. The contents of the room, all looks more suited to my time period than now. Not that that is a bad thing. Spotting a blanket, I grab it and wrap it around the screaming baby’s body.
“What is his name?”
“Baby.”
I stare at her blankly. “You mean he hasn’t got a name?” She shakes her head.
“I’m not his mother! Everyone calls him Bane because he’s a Bane to existence.” She speaks as though it is the worst thing ever.
“His mother killed herself just after it was born. No one wanted it, so I was lumbered with it.”
“Not anymore. He is mine.” And without another word I turn to leave.
“I don’t think so!” She hisses, I feel a hand on my shoulder. But less than a second later I hear her cry out and her hand disappear.
My skin tingles around my neck and I remember my protective collar.
“Don’t mess with me, bitch,” I spit back at the fallen woman and leave the room.
I find to what I guess is the front door quickly. Making sure the tiny blistered infant in my arm is correctly wrapped in the blanket and that all of his skin is covered. Because it looks like he has the same sensitivity to sunlight like Poyun.
“It’s alright, handsome. Let’s go find the guys and see if they can treat you,” I whisper to him, holding him to my chest, his face into my neck to make sure it’s covered, but not too close, making sure he isn’t suffocating.
I want to kiss his little head but don’t want to hurt him anymore than I know I am just holding his tender body.
“Shh, handsome,” I rock him against me trying to soothe his cries.
Arriving outside, the area seems somewhat familiar.
I continue to speak and whisper things to the baby as I walk further outside.
Sure enough, the building I came out of is a small cottage type house, with at least a dozen similar houses close by on the grassy estate. I can also see the roof of a much larger house in the distance behind the houses.
I sing quietly, rocking the baby and finally starts to quiet down.
I have to look at his face careful not to expose him and make sure I hasn’t suffocated him.
But no, he is awake. Though the poor mite’s eyes are almost swallowed shut, not completely. I can see his eyes are red and damaged from the light too, but he still tries to look at me.
Anger still burns brightly inside me at that evil woman.
I continue to hum to him as we make our way to the houses, trying to find the way to the larger house which I am hoping is Dallas’s home.
I don’t fail to notice a few people – mostly older children – watching me, but they make no move to speak to me and neither do I. I honestly don’t trust myself. I feel like slapping a few people or kicking them between the legs.
“What shall I call you? I can’t keep calling you handsome and there is no way in hell I’m calling you Bane! Not you aren’t handsome.” I smile taking another quick look at his red but still cute face. I can also see a small tuft of his blue hair poking out from the cover.
Yes, blue.
“Maybe Bluebell?” I suggest and he just stares at me best he can. I cup my hand over his face and protected it from any direct light.
“Not impressed? Alright then. How about Luke?” The same look. I don’t know what I expect him to do, but it is fun speaking to him either way.
I go on to read another dozen names out and still nothing.
“Fine. Then how about Marmite?” I say jokingly. I loved that English spread back on Earth.
Just thinking about it makes me hungry.
A gurgling noise has me stop in my tracks. “Was that you?” He blinks. “Marmite? You want to be called Marmite?” Another gurgle.
“Marmite?” I ask again giggling a little and he gurgles again.
Lord knows, I love him already.
How can anyone treat him like that?
Even in extreme pain, he still is so brave and calm.
“Alright, handsome. Marmite it is.”
He gurgles again and I return to walk the large estate.
After another minute, another whimper levesa his lips when a cool evening breeze catches his damaged skin.
“Sorry, handsome. Not much longer,” I promise turning the corner which I hope leads to the large house.
Only literally the moment I step around the corner I am surrounded by at least a dozen guards.
I instinctively drew Marmite closer to my chest and he begins to whimper, so I loosen my grasp but only slightly.
“Hand the child over and you won’t be hurt!” One guard threatens not scaring me in the slightest.
You don’t need to be psychic to know that cow had reported me.
“No way in hell. I’ll die before I let him anywhere near that old bitch!” I growl back. I guess that’s not what they expect me to say by the shocked looks which flick over their faces. After all, they do all have big guns trained on me.
“Lady Amber?” A familiar voice questions and I turn to see a familiar red head push through the crowd and step towards me. The other guards sent him a questioning look.
I feel a strange type of pressure inside my head but somehow push it away, blocking it out.
“What are you doing out here? Your mates will be going hairless.” He takes another step closer reaching for Marmite.
“Pass me Bane and I’ll have him returned to Tyme’s care.”
I growl and a pulse shot from my collar knocking him to his backside.
“Never!”
The men take aim and click what I’m guessing is a safety switch.
“No!” Ronan – Blake’s brother – jumps up and in front of me, protecting me despite what I just did to him.
“Weeks, move!” The guy I guess is his superior orders.
“No can do, sir. This is Lady Amber-”
“I don’t care who she is. She abducted a child and assaulted a high guard. She will be subdued.”
“She’s pregnant!” Ronan snaps.
“So?”
His fellow officers seem shocked by his response and a few even lower their guns. Much to the lead guy’s anger.
“I never told you to lower your guns!”
The words are barely out of his mouth when he is quite literally thrown away from me.
More than half the guards turn to our new guests.
“Lower your guns.” I am beyond happy to hear and then see a livid Dallas, followed by my mates – one of which I guess threw the guard – walk forward. The rest of the Poyun, who came with us, are with them, along with Aaron, his male mate and a bunch of other guards.
“But sir, she stole the baby from Tyme.”
My mates ignore the guns and push pass the men growling. Not surprisingly, they look scared and backed off. Ronan moves aside and they have Marmite and me in their arms almost instantly.
They mumble incoherently to me. I don’t understand, but I have a good idea.
Dallas doesn’t think twice, “She is my sister! I trust she has a reason for taking the baby.”
The lowered their guns, but before they have a chance to speak ear piercing cries fills the air.
Lenime and Phe pull back and for the first time seem to notice the baby in my arms.
And Aaron? When did he start hugging me?
“Why-?” I cut him off.
“We need to get to the house.” I find all my previous strength disappearing and before I know it I am crying and Phe is picking me up. Lenime must have sensed something from me because at the same time as Phe picks me up, Lenime gently picks the crying infant from my arms.
And if possible, he cries louder.
“We’ll go now, Amber,” Dallas replies and tells all his people who approach me to return to whatever they were doing.
But a guard either didn’t hear or didn’t pay attention because he stepped towards my mate and reached for the baby. Thankfully, Aaron is on hand, stepped in front of the man stopping him.
“Are you deaf, boy?” He scowls at the guard who is staring at him in awe or something. “Did my grandson not you tell you to leave?”
“Hmm? I mean… Yes, Sir.” The dazed guard salutes him. It would have been comical at any other time.
“What happened to him?” Lenime snaps gaining everyone’s attention, even the ones who can’t understand him. He sounds angrier than I have ever heard him after taking a brief look at the baby’s face. “The woman…” I sob, but it seems to be enough.
“Hold for a moment, please,” He holds out the baby to Aaron.
My brother gives him a small smile and nods before taking the little one.
He cradles the infant like a pro and cooes to him, but his smile disappears and sadness, then fury fills his face when he sees the little ones face.
“Have the woman who was looking after this child brought to me!” He orders in a tone I wouldn’t want to argue with.
“But-” The guards hadn’t left yet and are still stood around staring at Aaron and the Poyun.
“No buts! Do as I say!” They look to Dallas for confirmation. He is wearing a blank mask but nods. “Do as he says. We will be in the house.”
“Yes, sir!” This time, the group of guards saluted. They all turned in the direction of the cottage I came from but not before all taking a look at Lenime.
Why? I ask myself thinking it is probably because he is an alien.
But turning my head my question is answered, but another replaces it.
“W…What are you doing, Len?”
“The covering is not protecting the youngling,” He continues to strip off the top half of his suit until it was around his waist.
Aaron is quite literally drooling on Marmite’s head when my mate takes the small infant back and places him in the loose material around his waist.
It reminded me of a kangaroo. Except this kangaroo is a sexy huge Alien male with a body of a Greek God.
With an arm under the bundle around his middle, he turns to me taking me hand and licking it.
“Now we must return to the building to treat the youngling.”
He takes my hand and turn back to the large Manor type house.
Still in Phe’s arms with everyone now walking to the house I hear Aaron whispering to his mate, Lance – it looks like they left his wife and Dallas’s parents inside.
“I think I might need one… Make that a several get out of jail free cards.”
“Ha, Aaron you’re sexy as fuck but you’re living in dreamland if you think he’d do anything with someone else.”
“You’re right,” My brother sighs. “But maybe she’ll let me watch.”
His mate laughs hard. “You are such a freak sometimes.”
My brother hums in agreement. “But you love me anyway.”
“I do.” I watch out of the corner of my eye as he places a loving kiss on Aaron’s temple.
It is so strange to see my brother swoon. He was never really the dating type before, more the friends with benefits type.
“Can I just ask one thing?”
“And what’s that?”
“I want to be there when you ask.” He pauses. “I want to see her hit you.”
Aaron gasps. “You are so mean.”
I tune out and turn my attention to my mate. Lenime holding the baby carefully in his clothing.
Marmite is only making the slightest whimpers now. The Poyun’s clothing is made from a special material that protects them from the sun, but Lenime has his UV1A on so he will be alright for now.
“We were so worried when you vanished,” Phe says softly to me and some of the others agree.
I feel so loved.
“You are never leaving our side again.”
